I sharpening knives and my speciality is kitchen knives but I sharpen all knives such as folder, hunting and tactical knives. I don't sharpen lawn mower blades or saws, I am focused solely on knives.
Hi Peter, sorry this is a little off topic I just wondered if you've ever had problems with naniwa professional/chosera stones cracking? My 1000 and 3000 grit stones have just developed some hairline cracks, I don't soak them and let them air dry, it seems strange as my other stones are fine. I'd appreciate your thoughts. Alex
Alex, hi. Yes I have hairline cracks on my 5,000 Chosera. However they do not interfere with the sharpening. I don't know why it happens except that they must be very sensitive to humidity and such. Almost impossible to control though. I just ignore it. Thanks for visiting
Alex, I once made the mistake of storing my stones in one of those wine cabinets, the type that you can control the temperature. It was no longer used for wine and it wasn't plugged in but I ruined about five stones in one night. Many stones are pretty fragile when it comes to temperature changes and especially when water is introduced. However, as I said, the choseras are fine and despite the appearance of the hairline cracks, they have been good for years and have not become worse. Take Care.
I do store them in a plastic container, I may have to look at other options. Don't know if you've seen them but atoma do spare blades for their plates, I know you'd previously said the plates were getting expensive don't know if that helps but they are on eBay for about £45 pounds? As for the negitive comments about your teaching qualifications, my friends and family and I have an abundance of very sharp knives due to your teaching and for that I can't thank you enough.
Thanks again Alex. Yes I've tracked down the Atoma films here where I live. I'm now using a DMT lapping plate though, it's quite big and was expensive , $2455.00 but it's the best flattening plate I've used so far. The Atoma is great as well though .
